Appear+ is built by a purpose-driven team brought together by lived experience, empathy, and a shared commitment to transforming how appearance-based stigma and psychosocial well-being are understood and supported — especially across African contexts.
We are united by one belief: people deserve support that sees their full humanity, not just their diagnosis or appearance.
The Appear+ team is united by lived experience, purpose, and urgency. We are building from real stories of stigma, exclusion, and resilience, and we are committed to creating culturally grounded, emotionally safe, and sustainable solutions for appearance confidence and psychosocial well-being.
Our work sits at the intersection of community, technology, storytelling, and care — guided by dignity, responsibility, and long-term impact.
Founder & Lead Visionary
Ogo Maduewesi is an award-winning advocate, storyteller, and lived-experience leader with over two decades of work in appearance positivity, inclusion, and psychosocial advocacy. She founded Appear+ and its parent organization, The Appearance Positive (TAP), from firsthand experience with vitiligo, visible differences, and the emotional toll of appearance-based stigma.
Ogo’s background spans digital media, community storytelling, advocacy, and systems thinking. She was selected as a TechWomen Fellow in 2014, where her work in digital media and social impact strengthened her approach to technology as a tool for inclusion, connection, and social change.
At Appear+, Ogo leads:
Product vision and platform direction
Community architecture and content systems
Ethical use of AI and safety-first design
Partnerships, strategy, and impact alignment
While not a software engineer, Ogo is actively building her technical capacity through hands-on learning, guided exploration, and collaboration with technical partners and volunteers, ensuring that Appear+ is built responsibly, transparently, and within clear safety boundaries.
“Appear+ is built not from textbooks, but from lived realities. We build with heart, humility, and care — and only deploy what we can support safely and well.”
— Ogo Maduewesi

We’re building Appear+ with care, intention, and lived experience at the centre. We’re looking for collaborators and teammates who are values-driven, thoughtful, and committed to creating inclusive, ethical, and emotionally safe digital support for people living with visible differences.
Whether your strength is in community care, research, technology, storytelling, or advocacy, we value curiosity, humility, and a willingness to build responsibly. At this stage, many roles are collaborative or volunteer-based, with room to grow as Appear+ evolves.
